This week in cybersecurity from the editors at Cybercrime Magazine
Sausalito, Calif. – Jul. 8, 2026
The Internet is often portrayed as a neutral space, open and even democratic, a place full of possibilities. But for many women, the web is far from free. It is rife with violence, silencing, threats, and sexism disguised as humor or memes, and the line between entertainment and aggression is becoming increasingly blurred.
In her new book Internet is Not a Safe Place for Women, Italian activist and researcher Silvia Semenzin dismantles the comforting narrative that digital spaces are merely mirrors of society, showing instead that they are also structural amplifiers of its inequalities.
In 2018, Semenzin, a digital sociologist, became the promoter of the Italian campaign #intimitàviolata, which succeeded in approving a law reform that now criminalizes in Italy the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.
Semenzin, a Senior Researcher at AI Forensics, and an Adjunct Professor at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, recently joined host Heather Engel on the Cybercrime Magazine Podcast to discuss her work in detail, including the online environment that she sees as a researcher and activist, her book analyzing cyberviolence against women in male-populated digital environments, and more.
